The Ukrainian army may withdraw from Bakhmutthe adviser on economic affairs of the Ukrainian president Oleksandr Rodnyansky said on Wednesday, as quoted by the Associated Press.
“Our military will obviously weigh all options. So far they have held the city, but if necessary, they will strategically withdraw,” Rodnyansky told CNN. “We will not sacrifice all our people for nothing.”
The battle for Bakhmut, in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistanceas defenders withstood relentless shelling and waves of Russian troops taking heavy casualties in the months-long campaign to capture it.
Rodnyansky noted that Russia used the best troops of the mercenary group “Wagner” to surround Bakhmut. We recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as “destroyed”.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces in Bakhmut reinforcements have been sent, and the decision to hold the city is strategic. This was announced by the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense Anna Malyar in a television marathon.
Mallyar explained that the situation in Bakhmut itself is complex and tense. The Russian military has concentrated its main efforts there in order to try to completely occupy the Donetsk region.
According to her, the decision to detain Bakhmut was purely military, not political.
