Notice exposing the lives of ‘guest workers’ in Delhi
Spoiler alert
Divya Prabha and Kunchacko Boban in the lead roles were announced on December 16 on Netflix. The film revolves around Harish-Rashmi, a couple living in Delhi. Both work in two departments of a glove factory in Delhi. Their life in Delhi is part of an attempt to emigrate abroad. Their lives change after a sex tape is leaked.
Both live in very cramped conditions in Delhi. It is doubtful that there have been any Malayalam films that have marked the lives of Malayalis living in lower Delhi like this before now. Many films have shown Malayalis living in limited conditions in the Gulf.
But the Delhi Malayalees in the announcement were a novelty. He is shown very realistically in this film. While the realistic approach is not uncommon in Malayalam cinema, the ad has gone to an extreme.
Harish and Rashmi are living in a rented house which doesn’t have many amenities. There is limited space inside the house which includes a room, bathroom and kitchen. Harish mostly sleeps in the corridor outside the room.
Harish and Rashmi’s stay in Delhi is reminiscent of migrant workers arriving in Kerala. The film depicts that there are Malayalam ‘guest workers’ not only in Kerala but also in North India. The notice provides a helpless insight into the disadvantaged human being in a system riddled with their living conditions.
Beyond the main storyline, the leaked video, the announcement reveals several layers. Rashmi and Harish’s relationship also cracks as they try to find the real culprits behind the video. During the struggle to prove that he is not in that video something else also appears in front of Rashmi. Notification proceeds through successive discoveries and realizations.
