An activist files summary proceedings against an emergency order and ban on demonstrations in the city

Activist Frank van der Linde has filed summary proceedings against the city’s current emergency order. It’s for a show on Dam Square on Sunday afternoon. In any case, no demonstrations should take place this weekend. “My client called the pro-Gaza demonstration this morning, and the mayor did not respond. We are now challenging this through the courts,” said Willem Jebbink, Van der Linde’s lawyer.

Van der Linde announced the show this morning. He wants to be in Dam Square tomorrow at 2pm. According to the activist, the regulation issued by Halsema is against civil liberties and the constitution. “I am shocked by the events of the last few days. The ban on demonstrations on top of that is shameful. Right now people need to be able to express their anger,” said Van der Linde.

Urgent order

The emergency order has been in town since Friday night at 7 p.m. According to Jebbink, it is ‘very worrying that the government silences citizens throughout Amsterdam and Amstelveen for three days’.

“Using emergency regulations is a way to set aside our civil liberties. That in itself is worth checking out. With their total ban, the public administration goes around the human rights treaties, the Constitution and the Public Disclosure Act, because of a show that can only be banned in special cases.”, said Jebbink.

A digital hearing will be held tomorrow morning at 11:00 am. Journalists can follow this live. The preliminary relief judge at the Amsterdam District Court will decide the case.
