Around 4:17 am, a 49-year-old Opel driver was driving with three other people on the A3 towards Würzburg. Just before the Aschaffenburg Ost junction, he lost control of his Vivaro and crashed into a truck trailer. The Opel then left a debris field of about 150 meters before coming to a stop in the left lane.
Although the interior of the van was severely damaged, all four occupants were able to get out of the vehicle on their own. They were taken to hospital after receiving first aid from the ambulance service. The driver of the truck was unharmed.
Aschaffenburg firefighters secured the scene of the accident
Several other vehicles were damaged by the debris. Aschaffenburg firefighters secured the scene of the accident and cleaned the street. A street sweeper from the Autobahnmeisterei was also used for this.
While the Opel van and a debris-damaged Peugeot had to be towed away, firefighters managed to repair the truck involved so it could continue to the next intersection.
According to initial estimates, the overall damage amounts to several tens of thousands of euros. The police did not rule out the explosion of a tire on the Opel as the cause of the accident. After about two hours, the total closure of the A3 in the direction of Würzburg was lifted and the traffic on the hard shoulder and on the hard shoulder passed.
