Eleven years after Amy Winehouse’s death, the long-planned feature film about the singer’s life is beginning to take shape. As the US industry magazine “Deadline” reports, it is now clear who will direct the biopic: Sam Taylor-Johnson, who had a commercial mega hit at the box office in 2015 with the erotic thriller “Fifty Shades of Grey” (worldwide box office result: $567.9 million) landed. Full of anticipation, the filmmaker shared a screenshot of the “Deadline” message about her engagement on Instagram. She wrote: “It’s a dream to direct this film. I’m ready to go.”
Matt Greenhalgh, who previously wrote the script for Taylor-Johnson’s John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, is writing the screenplay. The film, which Deadline says will be titled Back to Black, is set to take a look at Winehouse’s life and music. The English-born singer won the hearts of fans with just two albums before dying of complications from alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27. It has not yet been decided who will play the lead role in the film.
A documentary about the artist’s life was made in 2015: “Amy” (director: Asif Kapadia) shows her career, discusses her drug addiction and her early death. In 2016, the film won an Oscar in the Best Documentary category.
