Travelers hoping to get to New York by train this summer will need to find another transportation alternative.
After only three months of recovery, the American company Amtrak has suspended service on its Adirondack line between Albany and Montreal, which means that the train will no longer stop in the metropolis.
This train, which is supposed to connect Montreal to New York, resumed service last April after being closed for three years due to the pandemic, reports The Insider.
According to a June 26 article published by WPTZ, a local media, this closure is due to the Canadian regulations imposed by the Canadian National (CN) in terms of high temperatures.
An Amtrak spokesperson told WPTZ: “Amtrak’s rail partner, Canadian National, has implemented a reduced speed policy in Canada due to the heat, which is impacting the Adirondack route. from Amtrak. Trains 68 and 69 will depart and arrive in Albany, NY until further notice. »
Amtrak did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Montreal tourism operators are already beginning to feel the consequences of the suspension of the only daily train between their city and New York, as reported by Global News.
“Summer is the busiest tourist season in Montreal. And between New York and Montreal, there is no rail alternative,” said Aurélie de Blois, spokesperson for Tourisme Montreal. “It’s very disappointing. »
Amtrak explained that the service suspension was due to “CN’s inconsistent application of heat regulation policy, which means customers could find themselves stranded or experiencing delays of more than three hours.”
For its part, CN passed the blame to Amtrak, saying the company had failed to pay the maintenance costs needed to make improvements to the line to make it capable of withstanding high summer temperatures.
“It’s a major constraint for many travellers,” said Ms. de Blois during the interview, adding that more than 100,000 people take this route each year.
