Amsterdam’s Successful HIV Prevention Strategies: 95% Decrease in New Infections from 2010 to 2022

Between 2010 and 2022, Amsterdam experienced a 95% decrease in the number of new HIV infections, the H-team of the GGD reports. The H-team is a partnership of GGD Amsterdam with various healthcare institutions and representatives and advocates of risk groups.

According to the H-team, the use of the HIV prevention pill PrEP, including the associated control regime, results in a significant decrease in the number of infections. Because PrEP users are checked more often, acute infections are detected more quickly and – after diagnosis – also treated more quickly. This has led to significantly fewer cases of HIV transmission in Amsterdam.

An estimate has been made of the number of people infected with HIV between 2010 and 2022. To arrive at these figures, the HIV Monitoring Foundation has designed a special calculation model. This foundation is one of the participants of the H-team. This model shows that in 2010, 200 people contracted a new HIV infection. In 2022, this number will have fallen to 9 people, a reduction of 95%.
