Consumers benefit when things go well on the Amsterdam stock exchange. For people who pay monthly pension contributions, this means that the pot of money for old age is increasing.
“Consumers’ pension money is invested. And if the stock markets do well, this will affect the pension pot,” says Hans Oudshoorn of Saxo Bank.
Investment strategist Ralph Wessels from ABN AMRO agrees. “Many people think that they are entitled to a fixed amount because they pay a pension premium. But that is not the case. That money is invested. And if the stock market does well, consumers benefit from that.”
The AEX index was above 800 points on Wednesday for the first time since the beginning of 2022. A strong price gain by chip machine maker ASML, which achieved better results than expected, brought the stock market index just above that limit.
800 point limit is mainly psychological
The level of 800 points is mainly psychological and has little meaning, says Wessels. “The stock market index is rising. Investors are confident that the American economy will make a soft landing,” says the investment strategist. “The market also expects the central banks to lower interest rates. Furthermore, there is currently a lot of liquidity in the market. That gives the stock market a boost.”
According to Oudshoorn, the stock market used to reflect the economic situation in a country, but this is less true nowadays. “The AEX index used to be driven by oil, industry and banks. Now these are tech shares, such as ASML and ASMI. The tech sector is doing very well, while we are seeing a slowdown in other sectors.”
It is therefore important for everyone that the economy continues to grow and our productivity continues to increase, Wessels believes. “That means more prosperity and a higher stock market.”
