The police arrested five Amsterdam residents on Saturday for attempted arson in Alkmaar, in an area that has been designated a safety risk area due to the large number of explosions.
Through the recently installed cameras, ‘a suspicious vehicle’ was spotted by the police around 2.30 am. They saw the 17-year-old Amsterdammer get out and walk towards Lekstraat. A police spokesperson told NH that the 17-year-old Amsterdam resident threw something into the bushes when officers wanted to speak to him.
“That is already a bit suspicious. Subsequently, goods that could be used in an explosion were found, and there appeared to be heavy fireworks in the bushes. Then this person has something to explain.”
There were another four occupants in the vehicle: two men aged 21 and two men aged 20. Like the 17-year-old, they were also arrested. All suspects are from Amsterdam. The role of the four in the car is being investigated by the police.
Prevent another explosion
The arrest of the five men means that another explosion has probably been prevented. Exactly a week ago, an 18-year-old and a 66-year-old Amsterdam citizen arrested, who were also suspiciously located near Lekstraat. Two days after these arrests, a 19-year-old Utrecht man was also arrested for attempted arson in this street.
Preventive searches are allowed in the area around Lekstraat, which has recently been designated a safety risk area. Mayor Anja Schouten also had extra cameras installed due to the many attacks in the Alkmaar neighborhood.
