Amsterdam police end hostage-taking at Apple store

The Dutch Police have confirmed the release of all the hostages who were held in the Amsterdam Apple Store for “a person with a firearm”, and has announced the arrest of the perpetrator, whose motives are still unknown.

“We can confirm that the kidnapper is from Apple Store. He is lying in the street and we are examining him with a robot for explosives. Agents control him remotely with firearms. The hostage is safe,” police said.

The motives of the alleged kidnapper are not yet clear, and the police will listen to the testimony of the victims, whom the agents have picked up after their release to transfer them to a police station and give a statement.

Several videos distributed on social networks by residents of Leidseplein, a central square in Amsterdam, showed, through a window, a man holding another at gunpoint, although the identity of those involved is not clear.

“There is someone with a firearm in the store in question. The police are on the spot with many special units to control the situation,” Amsterdam police said in the early afternoon.

In another message, he admitted the “hostage-taking situation in the Apple Store and Leidseplein”.

Several Dutch media, including the public television NOS and the local radio station AT5, assured that it was a robbery at the store of Apple Store which was reported to the police around 5:40 p.m. local time (4:40 p.m. GMT), and they stated that several witnesses heard shots inside this business.
