Amsterdam neurologist ‘creates a conflict of interest’ through side jobs

That reports news hour. In addition to being a leading doctor, Scheltens is also director of the Alzheimer Center in Amsterdam and holds various positions in the pharmaceutical industry and at an investment fund. The management of the hospital and the Supervisory Board have given permission for the additional positions of Scheltens.

Although collaboration between academia and industry is not uncommon, scientists must be transparent about their additional positions and publish them on their website. The Amsterdam neurologist did not do that, reports news hour.

In practice, the various functions of Scheltens mean that patients at the Alzheimer Center receive information about drug studies at the Brain Research Center, where Scheltens fulfills various additional functions.

MPs from the ChristenUnie and the CDA call the different roles of the doctor ‘worrying’ and want a letter with clarification from the minister. The professor therefore calls his incomplete profile on the hospital’s website ‘an omission’ and says he will adjust it.
