Amsterdam Court Sentences Two Men to Life and 29.5 Years for Mistaken Murder Case

Aug 04, 2023 at 2:13 PM Update: 14 minutes ago

The court in Amsterdam has sentenced Emylio G. and Randall D. to life imprisonment and 29.5 years respectively for their involvement in a mistaken murder of an Amsterdam trainee (17) and two attempts to do so. He was acquitted in two other murder cases.

According to the court, the men used a “ruthless business model”, or murder for money. That is why the sentences were so high despite the acquittal.

To the frustration of the judges, G. and D. were not present at the verdict. A court could require suspects to be present, but it would take too much time to fetch the men from jail.

According to the court, a life sentence for G. is the only way to protect society against him. He has previously been convicted of violent crimes. That does not apply to D. and that is why he received a temporary sentence. The men’s lawyers have already announced that they will appeal against such sentences.

Mohamed died because he was mistaken for someone else

This case concerns three victims who died in 2015 and 2018 respectively. In one of those murder cases, only D. was a suspect.

The court has established that 30-year-old G. and 41-year-old D. entered an Amsterdam community center armed in the evening of January 26. The victim Mohamed Bouchikhi worked there as an intern in 2018. The seventeen-year-old boy was mistaken for another, who was also present at the community center. Due to the mistaken identity, the innocent Bouchikhi became a victim.

Two others were seriously injured and that is regarded as attempted murder. The acting of D. as G. “shows an unprecedented cold-bloodedness and ruthlessness”, the court finds. They were both found guilty.

Acquittals in other murder cases

Also when it comes to the murder of Siegmar Flaneur, both men were suspected of having acted together. But according to the court, there is not enough convincing evidence for their role in the liquidation in the night of 10 to 11 February 2015. Both men have therefore been acquitted of this murder.

And in the Lucas Boom case, only D. was a suspect. According to the court, he is one of the shooters who shot dead Willem Holleeder’s criminal contact in broad daylight in Zaandam. The murder was committed in front of young school-going children.

But even in this case there is too little evidence. The fact that two anonymous witnesses state that D. played a role in the liquidation is insufficient for a conviction.

The verdict led to a lot of emotion among Bouchikhi’s relatives. Also with Flaneur’s relatives, who have been looking for the answer to the question of what happened to their loved one for so long.
