The court in Amsterdam imposed prison sentences of one to seven years on Wednesday in the case surrounding the controversial torture container in Wouwse Plantage in Brabant. The Public Prosecution Service had demanded sentences of up to nine years against the eight suspects on appeal.
The court previously imposed prison sentences of up to nine years on the suspects, with ages ranging from 36 to 70 years. The Public Prosecution Service demanded that these sentences be upheld on appeal.
The court called high penalties appropriate because it was a professional organization. “The preparatory actions were at a very advanced stage and there was an active search for intended victims. It is disgusting that the suspects seriously considered also kidnapping women and children in order to target their victims,” the court said in the ruling.
The main suspect in the case is 52-year-old Roger P., alias Piet Costa. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison, as was also the court. In his case, the court had to take into account the fifteen years in prison he was previously sentenced to in a major drug case.
Container with dental chair and torture tools
A cell complex of six sea containers was built in Wouwse Plantage. A seventh container was set up as a torture chamber, including a dental chair on which victims could be tied. Torture tools were found in the complex.
Fast cars were parked in a warehouse in Rotterdam. These were probably used for kidnappings. Weapons and police uniforms were also found.
The cars and containers are said to be intended to kidnap, imprison and torture criminal rivals or enemies in the cocaine trade. On June 22, 2020, the police intervened when, according to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects were about to place a first victim in their underworld prison.
