For those who drive through Amsterdam every day, today will take some getting used to. From now on, a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour applies in large parts of Amsterdam and Weesp, which is located in the same municipality.
The maximum speed has been reduced to 30 kilometers per hour on more than 80 percent of the roads in Amsterdam and Weesp. According to the municipality of Amsterdam, the measure is necessary because the roads and cycle paths are busy.
The new speed limit applies to all vehicles on the road. This means that in addition to cars, electric bicycles and fat bikes may not travel faster than 30 kilometers per hour.
In some places, public transport also travels at 30 kilometers per hour. Buses and trams that run on a separate track are still allowed to travel at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour. Emergency services are also allowed to continue driving faster than 30 kilometers per hour.
Municipality takes measures for flow
You don’t have to worry about extra travel time, the municipality promises. For example, it has taken “infrastructural measures” for the flow. This includes adjusting 170 traffic lights and lower speed bumps.
By lowering the maximum speed from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour, Amsterdam hopes to reduce accidents by 20 to 30 percent. The municipality believes that road users can better anticipate unexpected situations if they drive less fast. In addition, traffic makes less noise at lower speeds.
Anyone who does not adhere to the maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour risks a fine of between 32 and 383 euros. For example, if you continue to drive 50 kilometers per hour, you can expect a fine of 251 euros. After the increase on January 1, 2024, this is even 276 euros.
