Amstel Gold Race organizes virtual tour for amateurs and pros | NOW

The Amstel Gold Race organizes a virtual tour for amateur and professional cyclists on Sunday. The only Dutch cycling classic can not be driven in real life on that day because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Amstel Gold Race holds the race together with cycling platform BKool, which was recently responsible for the digital version of the Tour of Flanders, in which fourteen professional cyclists participated and which Greg Van Avermaet won.

The 26-kilometer tour includes the climbs of the Kruisberg, Eyserbosweg, Fromberg, Keutenberg and the highlight of the Cauberg in Valkenburg. There are three start times: 11am, 12pm or 1pm.

A number of professional cyclists have already promised to participate in the tour, which is scheduled for the professional race every day, but no names are mentioned. Participants must have an exercise bike.

“We have made every effort to continue the Amstel Gold Race weekend in an alternative way. With the virtual ‘AGR’ we focus on everyone who wants to take up the challenge, both the touring cyclists and the professional cyclists”, says race director Leo van Vliet.

“It will not be a competition, but a joint tour. We have chosen a course of 26 kilometers, this is not too long, but the challenge is certainly there, because the vicious climbs from the final of the Amstel Gold Race are all in it . “
