The corona pandemic thwarted game director Winfried Steinl several times. In May the time has finally come: The AMsemble of the Stadttheater brings a piece of city history to the stage of the Stadttheater Amberg with “Amberger Blut – das Machwerk 1934/53”.
While looking for material for his own theatrical production, Steinl remembered that the city archives contained a festival play with the somewhat lurid title “Amberger Blut” in two versions: one in the original version from 1934 in the typical NS hero and blood -und-Boden-style and on the other hand in the post-war version from 1953, very moderately denazified – both unspeakable concoctions. The committed support of the city archive brought additional material about the initiator and sponsor of this “Amberg blood”, the self-confessed National Socialist Filbig, who inconceivable way was re-elected mayor by the citizens of Amberg in 1952 and immediately the re-performance of the blood and soil festival initiated.
The AMsemble does not bring either version 1:1 to the stage, but on the basis of intensive research has created a documentary piece that quotes festival scenes, increases them to the grotesque and dissects them, allows contemporary witnesses to act, documents their motives and partly – also with a selected film – and imagery – exposed. In addition to historical images and videos, the various chronological levels are illustrated with original documents relating to the festival, props and costumes. A special feature of the production: director Steinl himself is on stage in one scene as the festival author Eugen Hubrich. Tickets for the performances on Saturday, May 7th and Saturday, May 14th at 7:30 p.m. are available for ten euros (reduced: six euros) from the Tourist Information Amberg Hallplatz 2, Tel. 10-1233 and at the box office.
