Endangered amphibians are now migrating again – also in the Freiburg region. Animal rights activists expect many toads and frogs to be looking for a place to spawn in the coming nights. Some of them are threatened, but they have been declining for years. Helpers who want to save the animals from dying on the street are on duty every day.
Every spring, when the nights get warmer, they leave their winter quarters and set out: frogs, toads, newts and other amphibians. They look for bodies of water where they can spawn. Once they have found a suitable one, they deposit several thousand eggs there. Experts estimate that up to a third of the region’s total amphibian population could migrate in the coming nights.
