BREDA – This week, Amphia was the first hospital in the Netherlands to implant a device that activates breathing in central sleep apnea. This is called the Remede System.
Central sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing becomes unstable during sleep and the oxygen level in the blood drops. This often causes fatigue, daytime sleepiness and can lead to heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
The Remede System measures whether breathing is normal during sleep. If breathing becomes irregular, the Remede System sends an electrical signal to the nerve that controls the diaphragm, restarting it. The diaphragm is an important muscle in breathing in and out.
The Remede system is only suitable for patients with central sleep apnea. In central sleep apnea, the breathing muscles do not receive a signal from the brain to move. The Remede system does not work for people with obstructive sleep apnea where breathing stops due to a blockage in the airway. Never before in the Netherlands has a hospital implanted the device. Amphia is the first to do so.
Study
The patients with the Remede system are being followed as part of the ReST study. In this study, additional patient data will be collected over 5 years to measure the effect of the treatment. In addition to the patient’s functioning, additional data is also collected from patients with heart failure, such as heart muscle function and endurance.
