Among large US companies, mentions of the recession are declining

In the last 2 years, US big companies mentioned the word recession quite often, but when commenting on the results of the last quarters, this word appears much less often. Corporate quarterly earnings reports are no longer full of recession talk.

The latest FactSet data show that mentions of the recession will decline for the 5th quarter in a row, reaching the lowest level since the 4th quarter of 2021.

As of last Friday, 470 of the S&P 500 companies had reported quarterly results, and only 53 of them mentioned the recession. This is down from 237 at the peak of this cycle in Q2 2022 and 61 in the previous quarter.

The 5- and 10-year average recession mentions for S&P 500 companies are 84 and 60, respectively.
