LONDON, KOMPAS.TV – The Taliban have “slaughtered” and viciously tortured scores of the Hazara minority in Afghanistan. This was revealed by the human rights group (HAM) Amnesty International.
Launch BBC on Friday (20/8/2021), a number of witnesses gave gruesome accounts of the heinous killings that took place in early July in the province of Ghazni, Afghanistan.
Since seizing the capital Kabul on Sunday (15/8/2021), the Taliban has sought to portray a more moderate image. However, according to Amnesty International, the heinous incident is a “terrible indicator” of Taliban rule.
The Hazara community is the third largest ethnic group in Afghanistan. They practice mainly Shia Islam, and have long faced discrimination and persecution under the Sunnis of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In the report published on Thursday (19/8/2021), Amnesty International stated that nine Hazara men were killed between 4 and 6 July in the Malistan district of Ghazni province in eastern Afghanistan. Amnesty International interviewed a number of eyewitnesses and reviewed photographic evidence following the killings.

Several residents of Mundarakht village said they fled to the mountains as the war between government forces and Taliban insurgents escalated. When some residents returned to the village to get food, the Taliban had looted their homes and were waiting for them.
Separately, a number of residents passing through Mundarakht to return to their hamlets were also attacked.
A total of six people are thought to have been shot by the Taliban. Some of them were shot in the head, and three others were tortured to death.
According to eyewitness reports, a resident was strangled with his own scarf to death. His arm muscles were also cut. The bodies of other residents were even shot to shreds.
