Amnesty ends projects in India due to blocked account | NOW

Amnesty International on Tuesday halted all projects in India after the Indian government froze bank accounts of the human rights organization. Amnesty International calls the blockade a retaliation because the organization has published critical reports of human rights violations in India.

“This is a shameful act by the Indian government, forcing us to temporarily stop Amnesty India’s crucial human rights work,” Julie Verhaar, acting secretary general of Amnesty International told the news agency. ANP.

In the reports, the organization wrote according to news agency Reuters including a shortage of police accountability during riots in the Indian capital New Delhi last February. The government would also spread Hindustani propaganda, while it goes against the democracy of India, which has a secular basis. Amnesty International fears the propaganda will lead to repression of the country’s Muslim minority.

Amnesty has halted all campaigns and investigations in India. The human rights organization will also fire all its personnel in India. It is still being examined how the activities in the country can be continued.

‘India: Amnesty receives foreign money’

India has been blocking the bills since September 10, it says because Amnesty International illegally received foreign money that violated laws. Amnesty says that this claim is unfounded.

In 2018, Amnesty’s accounts were also blocked by the Indian government. Even then, the illegal receipt of foreign money was cited as the reason.
