The ammonia leak at the Chemelot industrial estate in Geleen has been closed. Late last night, a leak had arisen due to an unknown cause, but a spokesperson for the South Limburg Security Region says that it has now been closed. No injuries were reported and no dangerous concentrations of ammonia were found outside the industrial estate.

The leak originated in a 5 cubic meter vessel. The vessel emptied, after which the leak could be closed. Measurements were taken outside the site to see if the leak could have harmful consequences for the environment. That turned out not to be the case.

The fire brigade installed water screens to prevent the spread of the ammonia. It is not known how long the clean-up of the ammonia will take.

Due to the incident, the A2 motorway near the industrial estate was closed in both directions for some time.
