The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced on Tuesday that his government will arrange for the United States to accept any anti-COVID vaccine to reopen the frontera and allow non-essential travel.

The president questioned the version that the United States will only allow the entry of people vaccinated with Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, while Mexico’s portfolio includes drugs from China and Russia.

“For those who have applied other vaccines, we are also going to make arrangements in the United States, so that we do not have any problems and I think we are going to be listened to because they are vaccines that were analyzed and are showing their effectiveness,” he said.

The US-Mexico border has been closed to non-essential travel since March 2020, and the restriction has since been extended month after month.

Although a reopening was expected on July 21, the Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard recognized then that the expansion of the Delta variant prevented the normalization of the border between the United States and Mexico., which accumulates about 2.75 million cases and almost 238,000 deaths, the fourth highest figure in the world.

López Obrador defended that his government has vaccinated the border population with Pifzer and Johnson & Johnson, with vaccination levels that “are already equal” to neighboring cities in the United States.

“I am sure that the border is going to be completely opened, relations are very good, work is being done in that regard,” he said.

The president of Mexico questioned the information that in the United States and Europe they will only allow the entry of travelers with vaccines that they endorse, which would exclude Mexicans immunized with the Russian Sputnik V or the Chinese Sinovac and CanSino.

“Things are invented and then political issues also come into play, when it comes to health that should be put first, and politics aside,” he said.

The president recalled that he received the AstraZeneca vaccine so if he goes to the United States he is “sure that he would not have any problem.”

“I was vaccinated with AstraZeneca and of course I can go,” he exclaimed.

The president recalled the goal of vaccinating with at least one dose the entire adult population that wishes by the end of October.

For now, just over 24 million people have received the necessary doses to complete the vaccination schedule in Mexico, which has 126 million inhabitants.
