President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took advantage of the flag-raising ceremony of the delegation that will compete in the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris to support Ana Gabriela Guevara, head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (Conade), who on Wednesday defiantly responded to questions regarding her management.
“I want to acknowledge Ana Guevara because lately, no, it’s been some time now, that people have questioned her, but she has a bronze medal, a bronze medal because I have a gold medal for media questioning, I beat her. And look how happy we are. Go ahead Ana, we love you very much, you have our support and backing,” she said.
The President also noted that on September 17 he will meet with conventional athletes and para-athletes to present them with awards following their participation in Paris 2024.
Ana Guevara sparked controversy yesterday when she presented the results of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, responding to the press over questions about not accompanying the athletes in the competitions and for traveling first class back to Mexico. “The more they screw me, the more I grow,” she said at the time.
Now, at the ceremony she showed her support for the para-athletes who will compete from August 28 to September 8. “For Mexico, you are a reference in the mental aspect. The mind is the most important muscle we have. The physical work is there but it is only defined by the mental capacity to overcome ourselves, that moment of saying do it. Success and I am sure that once again Mexico will play a decent role in Paris,” said Guevara.
The flag bearer of the tricolor delegation was the emblematic parathlete Salvador Hernández, who boasts eight Paralympic medals.
“Today we will go to Paris to show what we are capable of. We have prepared ourselves physically and mentally. We have a moral commitment to share with courage and empathy. With the Paralympic Games we feel empowered and it is an opportunity to inspire children,” said Claudia Romero, selected for parakeet kwondo.
The ceremony was attended by Martí Batres, head of government of Mexico City, as well as Liliana Suárez Carreón, president of the Mexican Paralympic Committee (COPAME).
Mexico won 22 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, of which seven were gold, two silver and 13 bronze.
