President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed confidence on Friday that the constitutional reform on indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples will have a “good path” and will be approved without problems in the Senate, after the Chamber of Deputies gave it the green light this week. He warned, however, that attention will have to be paid to ensuring that the legislative changes are applied so that they do not become a dead letter.
Answering questions on the subject at his daily press conference at the National Palace, the president considered that the next government will not allow the reform to remain only on paper and will put it into practice, since he said that the president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum “is an upright person with convictions.”
López Obrador insisted that the approval of the reform —proposed by the head of the Executive and which recognizes these communities as “subjects of public law,” which will allow them to receive and execute budgetary resources, in addition to being consulted in the case of projects that may affect their territory and way of life— “is a historic event” because it means “the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples, of the original peoples, of the most intimate truth of our country.”
“Now it goes to the Senate and I think there will be no problem. It will be discussed and, if necessary, approved on Tuesday, and then it goes to the state legislatures. But I see it on the right track,” he added.
“The Constitution and the reform are not being applied, because if they are not applied, they become a dead letter. Now we have to ensure that what is in the Constitution is respected, for example, that when a project is to be carried out, the communities are consulted, that indigenous peoples can directly receive resources for their projects,” said the head of the Executive.
