After the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made a “special mention” for the Mexican athletes who won 17 medals for the country.
Opening the morning press conference on Monday, one day after the closing of the Paralympic Games, the federal president highlighted the work of his fellow countrymen “who are representing us and doing very well.”
He confirmed that the national representatives won three gold medals, six silver medals and eight bronze medals.
The gold medals, he noted, were won by Juan Pablo Cervantes and Gloria Zarza, in athletics; and by José Arnulfo Castorena, in swimming.
The six silver medals went to Edgar Fuentes and Gilda Cota in athletics; Ángel Camacho and Haidee Aceves in swimming; and Luis Nájera in taekwondo.
The bronze medals were won in athletics by Rosa Guerrero and Osiris Machado; in weightlifting by Amalia Pérez and José Castillo; in swimming by Ángel Jesús Camacho and Jesús Gutiérrez; and in taekwondo by Juan García.
“A round of applause for them!” the president said to celebrate the Mexican delegation’s medal haul.
The Mexican Paralympic team that participated in Paris 2024 was made up of 67 athletes.
The head of the Executive stated that on September 17, the economic prizes will be awarded to the athletes who participated in both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024, including coaches, doctors and all those who made up the national delegations.
Those who won medals will be given “a little more,” he said.
“The two delegations will receive awards from the federal government’s Institute for Returning Stolen Goods to the People, from what is confiscated from criminals and corrupt individuals. They will receive support from that. All members of the delegations will receive support.”
