AMLO congratulates Osmar Olvera for his medal in the Olympic Games; “I am happy,” he said

Mexico City. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated that diver Osmar Olvera won the bronze medal in the three-meter springboard event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, making him a two-time medalist at the event. Although, he added: “We are missing the gold.”

He highlighted the role played by the delegation of Mexican athletes in the Olympics and said that tomorrow “we have to be on the lookout” when the Mazatlan boxer Marco Verde competes for the gold medal in the 71 kilogram category.

“It turns out that we have quite a few medals, but we are missing a gold one. That’s coming tomorrow,” he said in his morning press conference on Thursday, referring to the fight that the boxer will take part in on Friday in search of the gold medal.

The head of the Executive stressed that the diver Olvera has a scholarship and that when he returns he will be given a financial incentive for the medals he has won and “he will excel”.

He said he was happy after his fellow countryman’s achievement on the three-meter springboard, who a few days ago won silver in synchronized diving from this same platform.

“I am happy, so happy that just look at what I am going to tell you: Osmar Olvera has just won another medal in the three-meter springboard, that is, he already has two, we are fine and in a good mood.”

“Are you going to get Conade to give you your scholarship?” he was asked.

—They all have scholarships, I believe, I can confirm this, they are in the Ministry of Defense, they are supported by the Ministry of Defense. And once they return, as we always do, the entire group of Olympic athletes and coaches return, we will gather them all here and give them support, a reward. We already have their awards and they won silver, three meters —answered the president.

He said that the incentives for the Mexican Olympic delegation will be obtained from the 32 million dollars that the United States government returned to Mexico, the product of a large sum that was seized from Héctor Javier Villarreal Hernández, former Secretary of Finance of Coahuila and who is under criminal proceedings in that country.

When asked how much the incentives for athletes will be, the president said:

“Oh, they’re going to get upset! We’ve already set aside some. We’ll wait to see how many medals we’ll get in total and then we’ll give them to everyone. Of course, those who win medals get a little more, but that’s it. This is Mexico.”

Asked also if he did not consider that even though the harvest obtained in the two previous Olympic Games (Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2021) has already been exceeded, the current one would be low, the Tabasco native stated:

“The delegation is doing a good job, an outstanding job. Tomorrow we have to be on the lookout because it turns out we have quite a few medals, but we are missing a gold one. That’s what we’ll get tomorrow.”
