AMLO confirms that the US “had talks” with Guzmán López but not with ‘El Mayo’

Mexico City. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that the United States government “had talks” with Joaquín Guzmán López, son of the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera, but not with Ismael The May Zambada.

Both members of that criminal organization, The May historic leader, are in the custody of US authorities after they landed in El Paso, Texas, in a small plane.

He said that more members of the armed forces have been sent to prevent possible clashes in that region following the capture of the drug lord.

Questioned at the morning press conference on Tuesday about these arrests, the federal president said that there are many questions to be resolved and that until now the information that Washington has provided to Mexico has been limited.

“We are waiting for reports from the United States government, so that there is no speculation, no conjecture, but rather we know for certain what happened:

“How did these two people end up in the United States, in El Paso? We have already been informed that Guzmán López had talks with the United States government, that he wanted to turn himself in, that is what the United States government is maintaining, and that they did not know that he was going to turn himself in as well, or that Mr. Zambada was on the plane. That is what the United States government says.”

In this regard, the head of the Executive pointed out that both the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are in communication with the representatives of the White House in order to have more information on the matter.

“We need to know more about this. Where did they board the plane? What kind of plane? Why did two people board if the agreement was with one? Mr. Zambada’s lawyer says that he was subdued. Where? Who? We need to know all of that. If agents of the United States government from the agencies participated in Mexican territory.”

The Tabasco native stressed that he is absolutely certain that members of the Mexican armed forces did not participate in this action,

“We need to have more information and speak the truth. We are sure that when they have all the elements, they will inform us and we will let you know,” the president said.

Asked whether the damage that unknown persons caused yesterday in the family chapel of Dámaso López Núñez, El Licenciado – imprisoned in the United States and who was a member of the Sinaloa cartel – could be a sign of possible clashes in the region due to the capture of The May, The president said that so far there is only one report and that there are no extraordinary situations.

“More elements (of the federal security forces) are already being sent to that region of the country. However, there is no sign of clashes, nothing, and I hope that this does not happen. This is for the peace of mind of Sinaloa, Durango, and the entire region. We have no record of this (violence) so that there is no concern.”

He said that if there are signs of possible clashes, his government will be alerting the population.

“I don’t think it will happen, and I don’t wish it to. I urge everyone to act responsibly. The most sacred thing is life and we have to take care of it, protect it. And yes, this case that you mention, the desecration of some graves, did occur, but there is nothing more than that. The corresponding investigation is being carried out.”

The president said he believes there will be no acts of violence, as he trusts in the responsibility of the inhabitants of that region.

“There is nothing strange or exceptional in the entire region. And I hope that we will not have any problems, because I have great faith in the responsibility of everyone, the responsibility of the people.”
