Amien Rais Founds Ummat Party, These Are Challenges and Opportunities According to Observers

KOMPAS.com – Amien Rais officially declared its foundation Ummah Party on Thursday, 29 April 2021.

The declaration was broadcast on the YouTube account of Amien Rais Official.

“On behalf of the founders, leaders, cadres and members of the Ummat Party, the 17th of Ramadan 1442 Hijriah coincides with 29 April 2021 AD,” said Amien.

A number of figures who attended the declaration were former Chairman of the Bintang Bintang Party, MS Kaban, senior artist and singer Neno Warisman, and former convicted person in the ITE Law case, Buni Yani.

Apart from that in the party management, Amien Rais also served as the Chairman of the Syuro Assembly, while the position of general head was handed over to his son -in -law, Ridho Rahmadi.

The Ummah Party Challenge

Paramadina University political observer Hendri Satrio said that currently the Ummat Party can only rely on important figures, such as Amien Rais.

This is because this party is only newly established and has never competed in a general election (election).

“The Ummat Party has yet to show its performance, until today it will definitely rely on important figures in the party,” said Hendri to Kompas.com, Sunday (2/5/2021).

“There is indeed MS Kaban, Neno Warisman, but in my opinion, the main figure is Amien Rais,” said Hendri.

Family party presumption

Because he relies on Amien Rais, the consequence is that attacks aimed at the party will also target the former chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR).

For example, the Ummat Party was thought to be a family party because it appointed Amien’s son-in-law as chairman.

Passed the election

Hendri said, the challenge for the Ummah Party in the future is to be able to qualify as election participants. Only then thought about passing the threshold and making improvements.

He also believes that the party can still compete with other Islamic parties because of the figure of Amien Rais.

“It could be, because Amien Rais is still a bright name in the world of Islamic parties. Will it erode the votes of other political parties? Maybe there are, but not many,” he said.

For this reason, he suggested that the Ummat Party raise floating votes, namely 12-13 million votes which were forfeited in the 2019 Election.

“In 2019, there were around 12-13 million votes that were forfeited because the party did not pass the threshold. Now Amien Rais can convince the vote to transfer the choice to the Ummah Party,” he explained.

Appreciation for Amien Rais’ steps

Apart from that, Hendri appreciated Amien Rais’ move in choosing to form a new party after being disappointed with it PAN.

Even though his struggle was tough, he considered that Amien Rais’ disapproval of politics was responded to by creating a new party, not taking over someone else’s party.

“At least this political disagreement can be responded to by leaving the party and creating a new party, not trying to take people’s parties and trying to destroy people’s parties,” he said.

It also informed the attitude of Amien Rais to give the position of party general leader to his son -in -law.

This is because Amien Rais will later be able to better organize and build his party according to what he wants.
