The funeral ceremony for Mr. Jeon, the former chief of staff of Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party leader, was strictly followed on the 11th at the Seongnam City Medical Center in Gyeonggi Province.
At around 7:50 am that day, the bereaved family came out of the mortuary holding a picture of Jeon’s portrait. Behind the portrait, the bereaved family members holding the coffin of the deceased followed. About 30 people, including bereaved families and acquaintances, attended the funeral ceremony.
As Mr. Jeon’s coffin was loaded into the carriage, sobs were heard from everywhere. When the door of the carriage was closed, the bereaved family, who seemed to be Jeon’s wife and children, could not take their steps for a while, holding each other.
The transport car carrying the coffin of the deceased and the bus carrying the bereaved family left the funeral home around 7:59 am and headed for the burial site.
Mr. Jeon was the first chief of staff when Lee was governor of Gyeonggi Province. Mr. Jeon assisted CEO Lee when he was selected as the chief secretary of Seongnam City in 2013. After that, he served as Blue City Project Director, Sujeong-gu Mayor, Administrative Planning Bureau Director, and Administrative Planning Coordination Director (Deputy Director) in turn. He also earned the title of first provincial deputy director (level 3) in Seongnam City at the time.
In 2018, when Lee was elected governor of Gyeonggi Province, he served as the first chief of staff for Governor Lee, and then worked as the head of the Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) Business Planning Headquarters before resigning in December of last year.
Representative Lee visited Jeon’s mortuary at 7:43 pm on the 10th, the previous day, and paid condolences for about 20 minutes. Representative Lee is said to have met Mr. Jeon’s bereaved family and said, “He was the most honest and competent person among the public officials I worked with, but it is very unfortunate.”
Jeon was found dead at his home in Sujeong-gu, Seongnam-si, around 6:45 pm on the 9th. The police presumed that Mr. Jeon made an extreme choice, given that no suspects were found in the murder and that a suicide note worth six pages was found at the scene. Mr. Jeon is known to have expressed regret that he was the target of investigation, such as his name being mentioned in his suicide note.
