In the United States, it will be time to celebrate on this rare holiday. Stars and Stripes, barbecues, parades and fireworks are on the program for this Tuesday, July 4. Americans celebrate the anniversary of the 1776 Declaration of Independence, with which the 13 British colonies seceded, giving birth to the United States of America.
Origin of the party
On July 2, 1776, the declaration was handwritten by Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and approved by Congress on July 2. In the text, Jefferson lists the reasons why the colonists wish to sever the link with the British crown. The text advocates equality: “All men are created equal” and “endowed by the Creator with certain inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. A very relative principle since it only applies to white men, slavery not being abolished. It is the 4th of July which has remained as the official date and as a public holiday (paid since 1941).
Giant parades and fireworks
The great patriotic holiday is an opportunity for Americans to get together with family or friends. After sharing a good barbecue, it’s time to celebrate all over America. Giant parades and unusual competitions are planned for the occasion. For example, in New York, the inhabitants will be able to attend the contest of the biggest eater of hot dogs, organized on a beach of Coney Island and broadcast on television on a sports channel.

To close the evening, New York ignites with the traditional fireworks display. Broadcast live on television, the Macy’s Fireworks (name of the chain of stores that finances it every year) is one of the biggest pyrotechnic shows in the world. Between Manhattan and Brooklyn, more than 60,000 rockets will be fired from barges installed on the East River. Thousands of New Yorkers and tourists come from all over the world to attend this event.
