Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa are tied for victory everywhere after the first two America’s Cup races, contested on Wednesday in Auckland Bay, under cloudy skies and a dozen knots of wind. The New Zealand sailor easily won the first with 31 seconds ahead of the Italian challenge, before the latter narrowly won in the second, crossing the virtual finish line seven seconds in front of his opponent. “We followed our plan, kept our cool and the boat did the rest,” said Jimmy Spithill, Luna Rossa’s Australian skipper, after his crew equalized. “It’s great to be competitive”. “We seemed to be a bit rusty on this last one (regatta). It’s no secret that we haven’t raced in quite a while, ”said Team New Zealand skipper Peter Burling,“ and every mistake pays off ”. The N.3 and N.4 regattas of the 36th America’s Cup, which are held in the best of 13 rounds, will take place on Friday.
