America’s Cup: competitors must have a boat built in their country

The American union Stars & Stripes is in difficulty, after the announcement Thursday of an independent arbitration committee about the boats lined up for the America’s Cup (the next edition of which will take place next March).

This committee has indeed declared that each competitor must use a boat built in his own country, whether during the America’s Cup or the event which will appoint the challenger, who will face Team New Zealand, the defending champion. .

Four challengers in the running

However, Stars & Stripes would be struggling to complete their boat, according to Stuff Media, New Zealand’s largest newspaper company. And the American challenge hoped to use the first generation of the “Te Aihe” boat, used by Team New Zealand. The committee’s decision therefore put an end to that hope.

Four challengers are engaged to try to steal the America’s Cup from the New Zealanders, victorious in 2017 against the Americans of Team Oracle USA. They are the British from Ineos Team UK, the Italians from Luna Rossa and the Americans from American Magic and therefore Stars & Stripes.

These four challenges will face off from January, with the winner going up against Team New Zealand in March.
