The United States government recommends that citizens wear cloth masks if they wish to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, US President Donald Trump said Friday. In addition, Trump said he himself will not follow the advice and will not wear a mask in public.
In the President’s daily press conference on the coronavirus, Trump emphasized that wearing fabric masks over the mouth and nose is no substitute for maintaining social distance. According to the United States government, keeping as far away as possible is still the most essential way to slow down the spread of the virus.
“It’s a voluntary choice to wear a mask. You can do it, you don’t have to,” Trump said. “I choose not to do it, but other people may want to do it and that’s okay.”
These are non-medical masks, special medical masks are stored for use in healthcare. Improvised cloth masks, such as a scarf over part of the face, are a good alternative for normal citizens, according to Trump.
The death toll in New York State rose to 2,935 on Friday, an increase from 562. The number of confirmed infections rose from 92,381 to 102,863. New York is the epicenter of the corona outbreak in the US.
Several European countries mandated wearing face masks in certain public areas last week. The World Health Organization WHO is also considering changing the advice not to wear mouth masks, but following RIVM, mouth masks are not useful under the current measures and even bring them extra risk with him.
