In the US, people with a weakened immune system already received a third corona jab in August. Because their immune system does not work properly, they did not build up sufficient resistance against the corona virus with the first two injections. That shot is not seen by the CDC as a so-called booster, but as part of the first vaccinations because the vaccine only provides sufficient protection after three shots.
The shot can be given with vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson, according to the CDC. It does not matter which drug is given the first three times. If the first vaccination is done with J&J, it is also a third shot. This product already provides more protection after one vaccination than the other products, in normal situations a single dose is needed.
A fourth shot is currently very unusual. A number of countries, including Belgium, have approved a third vaccination against the corona virus. That booster shot with us is for the time being reserved for residents of residential care centers, people over 65 and people with a lowered immunity, but there are also talks about a third shot for healthcare staff.
