An American YouTuber has been sentenced to six months in prison for obstructing a federal investigation. Trevor Jacob deliberately crashed a plane for a video last November.
Thirty-year-old Jacob was filming a flight over the American state of California when he said the engine stopped. He then jumped out of the plane, a Taylorcraft BL-65, with a parachute.
Jacob continued to film the plane as it crashed into a forest. The video, titled I Crashed My Airplanewas viewed millions of times on YouTube before being taken down from the site.
It later turned out that Jacob had staged the crash. The YouTuber already had the parachute on before he got into the plane. He had also packed the plane with cameras. In addition, Jacob did not attempt to restart the engine or contact air traffic controllers.
After the crash, Jacob told the American investigation board NTSB that he did not know where the plane had crashed. That turned out not to be true.
Jacob and a friend picked up the crashed plane with a helicopter. They loaded the device onto a trailer and took it to the YouTuber’s home. There he further dismantled the plane and put the parts in different waste containers.
Due to the deliberate crash, Jacob previously lost his pilot’s license.
