American Universities Controversy: Hitler Image and Anti-Semitism Amid Israel-Hamas War

Opinion battles rage in American universities over the war between Israel and Hamas

An image of Hitler appearing on a giant screen in the University of Michigan stadium on Saturday evening, before a match, provoked public astonishment and strong disapproval. The image was shown during a quiz preceding the meeting, one of the questions of which was the birthplace of the Nazi dictator.

Following criticism, the University of Michigan administration apologized to viewers, explaining that the questions and their illustrations came from a third-party company.

“We deeply regret the content posted because it does not represent our institutional values. The University of Michigan will no longer use this third party in the future, and will now implement stricter screening and approval procedures for any content displayed on the video boards,” Matt Larson, University of Michigan athletic director, told media.

The image of Hitler projected for several seconds on the giant screen aroused strong disapproval, in the context of the climate of anti-Semitism in the United States sharpened by the war between Israel and Hamas. The battles of opinion are particularly raging in American universities, where BDS and pro-Palestinian movements are very active. Many student institutions across the country, including Harvard, have been criticized for failing to clearly condemn the Hamas attacks.

On Saturday, the president of a Detroit synagogue was stabbed to death in front of her home. The police are investigating a possible anti-Semitic motive for this crime.
