American Uniform Passion: Exploring the Love for American Law Enforcement and TV Series

“CHiPS”, “Sheriff Scare Me”, “NCIS, CSI”, “NYPD Blues”, Starsky & Hutch”… For decades, generations of viewers have been fed stories and images about the forces of order across the Atlantic, whether it’s the New York police, the Los Angeles police, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) or the crime scene investigators…

“CHiPS”, “Sheriff Scare Me”, “NCIS, CSI”, “NYPD Blues”, Starsky & Hutch”… For decades, generations of viewers have been fed stories and images about the forces of order across the Atlantic, whether it be the New York police, the Los Angeles police, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) or the Miami crime scene investigators.

For some, these outfits represent more than a TV series, it’s a real passion. So when we saw “in real life” in front of the Saintes courthouse, Saturday June 24, we wanted to know more about the reasons for this love.

Under a sun worthy of the Nevada desert, there were about ten of them shooting a clip to promote their love of American law enforcement: California Highway Patrol, NYPD, LAPD, NCIS… Each has their favorite outfit.

For Clément Borgognon, it was the first, immortalized by the American series “CHiPS” where the stainless Poncherello and Baker rode their motorcycles at the end of the 1970s. Except that for the young man, it was the agents in car that he prefers. “I ordered my uniform from one of the tailors who work for the CHP,” he explains proudly. The total note amounts to approximately 2,000 euros. Just for his “campaign hat” from Stratton, with tassels and chinstrap, it costs 400 euros.

“GTA V”, the revelation

The 19-year-old Gontais, a volunteer firefighter in the city, has had an all-consuming passion for uniforms for nearly ten years. “It started when I was given a heavy helmet for my 10th birthday,” he says. It was while playing “GTA V” on PlayStation that he was conquered by the United States of America. “I discovered the American police world thanks to this game. Instead of stealing police cars, I collected them. He is not the only one to have fallen in love with this profession, which includes 18,000 different agencies across the Atlantic.

Over time, he made a group of friends on the Internet who shared the same fervor. In 2021, at the festival Assault on America, in Luynes (Touraine), he finds one of them in real life, Florian, who lives in Blois, in Loir-et-Cher. From this moment, a small group is formed. He shares what drives them on a website and social networks, American Uniform Storage.

“We offer to give advice on buying a uniform, develops Clément Borgognon. We know how complicated it can be. The small group is currently considering creating a company to market its advice to individuals, but also to film and television productions. They have already had to inform the production of a French film, at the end of last year.

Paillé patrol

If he is particularly fond of the CHP, the young Saintongeais would like to become one of its members “for real”. “I’ve been thinking about it for a few months,” he says. First of all, I have to obtain the “green card” after five years of residency. If not California, why not join the Texas Department of Public Safety?

In the meantime, head to the gendarmerie school at the start of the next school year. Note that with his comrades, they will patrol (for fun) at the Paillé country festival, near Saint-Jean-d’Angély, from August 4 to 6.
