Although the floodlights are on, the Eiffel Tower is closed at night. That didn’t stop two American tourists, who snuck past the barricades after a damp tour of the city and were found asleep in the tower the next morning. Photo: Erik Johansen / NTB
Two American tourists were found sleeping on Monday morning after a hard night on the town in Paris. The accommodation they had chosen? High up in the Eiffel Tower.

Security guards woke the two uninvited guests early on Monday morning when they checked the tower before the doors were opened at 9.
At 10.40pm on Sunday evening, the Americans had bought tickets like everyone else, but snuck past some roadblocks on the way down. They were found in a place not normally open to the public, between the second and third levels of the world-famous tower.
– They posed no obvious threat, says Sete, the company that operates the tower.
Prosecutors in the French capital say the two overnight guests “appear to have been stuck because they were so drunk”.
Both firefighters and specialists in rescue operations at height were sent up the tower to retrieve the two tourists, who were taken in for questioning. The expulsion of the unorthodox guests caused the opening of the tower to be delayed by about an hour.
