An American teacher named Cody Capps died in intensive care due to flu-related complications.
The 37-year-old father of four was visiting his family in the US state of Indiana when he suddenly fell ill.
He tested positive for influenza A and was admitted to the intensive care unit when his condition deteriorated, but he died, according to the British newspaper The Sun.
His family was shocked that he was in good health, and his wife said: “Cody was a devoted husband and father, and was instrumental in the success of many students.”
Influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by viruses that spread globally, according to the World Health Organization.
There are four types: A, B, C, and D. The first two types cause seasonal epidemics.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said influenza A is currently the dominant strain in the United States.
The main symptoms include fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, runny nose, and feeling unwell.
Most people with influenza recover within a week, but some, such as young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, may be at risk of death.
In rare cases, the virus can develop into serious conditions, including pneumonia, and can also exacerbate other chronic problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure, which can quickly become life-threatening.
Influenza can also cause inflammation of the brain, heart or muscles, and this can lead to sepsis, an emergency condition that can be fatal if not treated immediately.
