Kristofferson was born in 1936 to an Air Force father, and later joined the Army, flying helicopters during his service. He then turned to music, going to Nashville to work as a songwriter.
Kristofferson wrote songs like “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” which became a hit for singer Johnny Cash. Kristofferson won a Golden Globe Award for her role in the film “A Star Is Born” opposite American singer Barbra Streisand in 2017.
