American R&B singer Ari Lennox was arrested this morning at Schiphol after she became furious because she said she had been ethnically profiled by a KLM employee. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee says she was arrested because she caused nuisance.

The 30-year-old Courtney Shanade Salter, as Lennox is really called, first tweeted this morning from Schiphol: ‘Hello Amsterdam’. Soon the tone of her messages turned angry. She wrote: ‘Racism. Amsterdam, I am horrified. I was so happy to travel and this evil woman… I’ve never experienced racism so blatantly before.”
–
She then started a tirade with a lot of swear words, in which she said, among other things, that security at Schiphol ‘hate black people’. She was not only angry online, but also at the airport itself. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee intervened and arrested her, much to the dismay of the artist. ‘I was arrested in Amsterdam because I reacted to a woman who profiles me ethnically.’

The Marechaussee confirms that the woman was arrested ‘because she caused a nuisance’, but ‘the how or what’ is being investigated further. KLM says it will find out exactly what happened. “We take this very seriously, of course,” a spokesperson said.

Ari Lennox – 1.8 million followers on Instagram, 700,000 on Twitter – is considered a talented singer and is compared to Erykah Badu. Her biggest hit is Shea butter baby, which was viewed 49 million times on YouTube. Lennox toured with singer/rapper Lizzo, among others. She was supposed to be at the North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam in 2020, but that was canceled due to corona.
