Well, doesn’t that sound familiar to the American? He has around a million followers on YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok, eats his way through Germany’s supermarkets, discount stores and restaurants – with his account “ryaneatss”, the American Ryan (27) from Bielefeld (NRW) has become a minor celebrity.
It is also simply interesting and funny how an American rates and evaluates the “German” dishes Döner, Currywurst, Käseschnecke or Bratwurst. His videos reach countless users, he interacts with his fans and responds to their tips and recommendations. This time was no different – but when he goes into an Aldi in NRW, he is stunned by what he sees!
American goes shopping at NRW-Aldi
Aldi is Germany’s pride and joy as a discounter. What is sold there is supposed to be of good quality. Even for guests from abroad – you would think. A follower recommends: “Try the poultry roll from Aldi.” No sooner said than done. The man from Virginia (USA) goes to his favorite Aldi and marches straight towards the baked goods section. Then he sees it – the very last poultry roll that is still there.
He buys it for 1.19 euros and immediately unpacks it outside. He proudly shows it to the camera, curious to see how it tastes. He bites into it, chews – and doesn’t say anything at first. His facial expression shows confusion. The American doesn’t really like it… Then he finally says something, asks: “The first thing I want to know about this roll: what kind of meat is in this roll? Can anyone tell me? Is it pork or beef?”
Surprise over poultry roll
Ryan takes another bite of the roll and then judges the bread: “As always in Germany, the bread is baked to just the right temperature. It looks a bit crazy, but it’s OK.” But one mystery remains: what kind of meat is in the chicken roll? Not easy to know for an American.

So he has one last option: he rips the poultry sausage out of the roll and holds it up to the camera. “It looks like a bratwurst,” he guesses. He bites into the “naked” sausage, chews it thoroughly and judges it harshly: “It’s just a boiled sausage. Nothing special, a 4 out of 10 for me.” BOOM! That should make it clear that he won’t necessarily eat the poultry roll from Aldi again…
