77-year-old Alcala was sentenced to death in 2010 for five murders. One of the victims was a 12-year-old girl. The killings were committed between 1977 and 1979. During the same period, Alcala participated in a TV check program, which earned him the nickname The Dating Game Killer.
In 2012, he was extradited to New York, where he was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of two more women.
Authorities believe he could have as many as 130 lives on his conscience across the United States.
California has not executed anyone since 2006. In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom imposed a moratorium and dismantled the equipment used for executions at San Quentin Prison.
