Pamong about 55,000 finalists of the New York marathon on Sunday, there was Kevin Leimkuhler. This 31-year-old American, who is in 1142nd place in the ranking, broke a record.
In 2h51min27 – almost 15 km / h on average – he became the fastest person in the world to run a marathon in Crocs, according to the specialist site Citius.
Two records this year
The runner from Denver, who has a personal best (with carbon plate shoes or “super shoes”) of 2h38, beat the previous record, set this year at the Manchester marathon, by over 6 minutes.
In 2017, the photo of another American starting a race in Crocs shook the small running world. Then at the age of 18, Benjamin Pachev finished a half marathon in 1h11:53 with those plastic clocks on his feet.
Benjamin Pachev, another Crocs fan
Coming from a family of 10 children, he refused to put on his sneakers to go running with his parents so he did his session in Crocs. The experience was convincing, the Indystar said at the time. “It’s like the feelings of athletic spikes,” said Benjamin Pachev, who cited several arguments to defend his favorite shoes: low price, life of several thousand kilometers and no blisters on his feet.
In 2021, Benjamin Pachev improved his half marathon mark to 1h06min33. He also ran 5,000m in 14’47 – more than 20 km/h on average, again with Crocs. According to World Athletics, he has a best of 2:31:58 in a marathon, but it is not specified whether he ran with his clogs or in traditional shoes.
On the Guinness World Records website, the best marathon performance in Crocs dates back to last year, in 3h02. The confirmation of Kevin Leimkuhler’s time could take several weeks.
