American Rabbis and Rabbinical Students Call for Ceasefire in Gaza Strip at UN Headquarters

It’s a real symbol. About three dozen rabbis and rabbinical students from American organizations demonstrated on January 9 at the United Nations compound in New York. They urged a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and called on President Joe Biden’s administration to stop vetoing UN Security Council resolutions along these lines.

The mobilization was organized by American Jewish groups, such as Jewish Voice for Peace, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, and Rabbis for a Ceasefire. A total of 36 rabbis were present inside the U.N. Security Council chamber, according to social media posts by the groups. They had access to the building as part of a guided tour, reports the Huffington Post. Several slogans appeared on their signs, such as “ Biden: the world says ceasefire » et « Biden: stop vetoing peace ».

Growing mobilization

More than three-quarters of the 193 states in the UN General Assembly backed a demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire last December amid the war’s enormous toll. For its part, Washington vetoed several resolutions calling for a ceasefire at the Security Council, saying it would allow Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that governs the enclave, to regroup and rebuild.

Several ceasefire protests have taken place recently in multiple locations across the United States, near airports and bridges in New York and Los Angeles. They also gave rise to vigils in front of the White House and marches in Washington, near the Capitol.
