Some American politicians want the government to limit China’s access to RISC-V technology. According to policymakers, the open source nature of the technology allows China to circumvent US chip export restrictions.
According to politician Mike Gallagher, every American company or citizen would now have to apply for an export license before doing business with China that involves RISC-V technology. Marco Rubio, a US senator, opines according to Reuters then again that China is designing its own open source chip architecture via RISC-V. According to the man, this way the country could avoid American sanctions and further grow its own chip industry. “If we don’t expand our export restrictions, China will one day overtake us as the world leader in chip design,” it said.
RISC-V is open source Instruction Set Architecture, or ISA, which belongs to the RISC architecture. These architectures are standards that determine how computer chips, such as a processor, handle data and instructions. There are currently two dominant architectures: the Complex Instruction Set Computeror CISC, and the Reduced Instruction Set Computer, or RISC. X86 processors, such as AMD and Intel processors, fall under the CISC architecture. Arm chips fall under the RISC heading.
