It was decided that the Spanish club Barcelona would launch negotiations to renew the contract with its star Sergio Busquets, after the current winter transfer market closed.
Busquets, a graduate of the football academy of the Catalan club, has a contract with Barcelona until June 2023.
In principle, the 34-year-old will have to accept a significant reduction in his annual salary, due to Barcelona’s economic troubles.
Even if he accepts the renewal of the contract, the negotiations with Busquets are expected to be affected by the offers he has already received from the American League.
Barcelona hopes that the midfield star will postpone his departure to “Uncle Sam’s country” in the summer, as he will leave at that time as a free player.
To avoid that fate, the Spanish newspaper “Sport” says that Busquets is getting the green light from the club’s management by signing a new contract that allows him to leave in January of 2024.
In that case, Barcelona will not lose one of its most prominent elements for free, and the timing will be appropriate, as it will coincide with the start of the American League.
