American military plane crash off Japanese island: 8 on board, fate unknown

An American military plane crashed into the sea off the Japanese island of Yakushima on Wednesday. According to Japanese media, there were eight people on board. Nothing is yet known about the fate of the crew members.

The accident happened around 7:00 am (Dutch time). Shortly before, the plane had disappeared from radar. According to local media, the plane attempted to land at Yakushima airport. The plane’s left engine is said to have been on fire.

Press agency Reuters writes that fishing boats in the area found three people in the water. A representative of the local fishery reportedly reported this. It is not known whether it concerns the crew of the plane.

The Japanese coast guard said it had sent patrol boats and planes to the area where the plane crashed into the sea.

The plane is a V-22 Osprey, which can fly as a helicopter and as an airplane. The Osprey is used by the US Navy and the Japanese Army.

The Osprey is controversial because, according to critics, many accidents can happen with it. The United States and Japan claim the plane is safe. In August, an American Osprey crashed off the coast of northern Australia.
