American media: Iran’s plan to attack Israel through Iraq – Moscow and Tehran are preparing a defense agreement –

Israeli intelligence agencies estimate that Iran is planning to launch an attack from Iraqi soil against Israel in the coming days, possibly before the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election, according to the Axios news website citing two Israeli officials who wanted to maintain their anonymity.

As the publication reports, a large number of drones and ballistic missiles are expected to be launched from Iraq against Israel.

Axios points out that the possible execution of such a plan by pro-Iranian militias in Iraq could be an attempt by Tehran to avoid another Israeli attack on strategically important facilities in Iran.

Russia-Iran Treaty

The treaty that Russia and Iran plan to sign soon will include closer defense cooperation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today.

The two countries’ military ties are a source of deep concern for the West as Russia wages war against Ukraine and Iran and Israel exchange missile and airstrikes in the Middle East.

“The treaty on a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Iran that is being prepared will become an important factor in strengthening Russian-Iranian relations,” Lavrov said on state television.

He said the agreement was being prepared to be signed “in the near future”. Russia has said it expects Iranian President Massoud Pezheskian to visit Moscow before the end of the year.

“It will confirm the parties’ desire for closer cooperation in the field of defense and interaction for the benefit of peace and security at the regional and national levels,” Lavrov said. He did not specify what form the defense ties would take.

Russia has deepened its ties with Iran and North Korea, which are very competitive with the United States, after it went to war with Ukraine.

Rockets

The United States accused Tehran in September of delivering short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine, and imposed sanctions on ships and companies it says were involved in supplying Iranian arms.

Tehran denies supplying Moscow with missiles or thousands of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) that Kiev and Western officials say Russia uses against military targets and to destroy civilian infrastructure, including Ukraine’s power grid.

The Kremlin refused to confirm the receipt of Iranian missiles but admitted that its cooperation with Iran includes “the most sensitive areas”.

Germany closes Iranian consulates

In response to the execution of German-Iranian Yamshid Sharmad in Iran, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that it is closing the country’s three consulates general in Germany.

According to the ministry’s announcement, these are the Iranian diplomatic missions in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich. The Iranian embassy in Berlin remains open. The German decision also means that 32 consular officials will have to leave Germany immediately, unless they hold German citizenship. Previously, the Iranian charge d’affaires had been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We have expressed our strong protest against the actions of the Iranian regime and we reserve the right to take further action,” the German ministry said in a related announcement on the “X” platform.

At the same time, the German ambassador in Tehran, Markus Potchel, presented himself to the Iranian foreign minister in order to express the German government’s “strong protest” over the murder of Yamshid Sharmad, who was convicted of “terrorist action”.

So far, the German government has resorted to such a punitive measure only in the case of Russia, after the invasion of Ukraine.
